Cover 3: build a plan beyond the deep ball
You don't have to force a shot downfield to keep a drive moving. Compare runs, quick throws, and play-action calls to find your next option.
Cover 3 splits the deep field into thirds. Start by making an underneath defender choose between two throws, then see whether a deeper window opens. Use the notes below to know who you're reading.
The most-used plays vs. Cover 3
Do the busiest calls hold up against three deep zones? Start with PA Read and Inside Zone, then choose the plays you want to check.
Why these 8? These are the most-used plays in our ten-season Dynasty simulation benchmark, ranked by recorded attempts across all coverages. Pick any two to see how the plays perform statistically against Cover 3.

The read against Cover 3
Watch whether an underneath defender steps toward the run fake. Check the intermediate route behind him before the deep defender closes the window.
What can shut it down
If the linebackers hold their depth, the fake hasn't opened that window. Don't force the throw between two waiting zones.
#2 by usage · 14,088 attempts across all coverages
Make the box count matter
Inside Zone
Gun / Y Off Trips
4.20avg. yards
5,169 recorded attempts vs. Cover 3
The read against Cover 3
Count the defenders near the line. A light box gives you a reason to try the run instead of forcing a throw into the underneath zones.
What can shut it down
A safety can rotate down into the box. Read that rotation; the three-deep label alone doesn't tell you the run is there.
Inside Zone averaged 4.20 yards. PA Read averaged 6.31. Check the read and risk before choosing.

Build a drive, not just a highlight
Look through the play art before chasing the highest average. Find a call where you can explain your first read and your next option. A play you understand is easier to practice than one you've picked on the play clock because the number looked good.
Keep a run and a pass, then try them in a few different situations. When a drive stalls, save that rep too. Knowing which throw you forced or which read you missed gives you something specific to work on.

A quick note on the numbers
We ran ten Dynasty seasons and combined results for the same play, formation, and set across playbooks. The diagrams come straight from the game. Averages use recorded yard-stat attempts, which aren't always the same as snaps. Coverage refers to the defensive call, not every adjustment after the snap. These results give you plays to try; they don't guarantee yards in your game.
The usage list ranks matched offensive plays by those attempts across all coverages. It measures CPU simulation usage, not popularity among human players. Different formations stay separate, and a goal-line run has a different job from a deep pass.
The play notes explain reads to practice, not why a measured average was high or low.
