CFB 27 · Build your team
Build a Spread roster that gives you answers
Stop recruiting five-star names without a plan. Find the QB, receivers and line traits to look for when you're building a Spread offense in CFB 27.
You've spread the defense out. Now somebody has to win that space. Start with the throws you trust, a run you'll actually call, and a QB who can handle both. The recruiting board should help you do more of that next season.

QB1Mobile, accurate quarterback
Mobility adds a keeper threat when you use the book's read plays; medium accuracy supports the passing game. A pocket passer can still run its non-option calls.

4 plays to get a feel for the book
Try these commonly called plays from Spread. Check the look before the snap, then work through the suggested reads. Route findings show productive targets in our CPU games; follow the coverage, not a fixed throwing order. The bars show yards gained.
PA Read
Shotgun · Spread Y-Slot Wk
Before the snap: Locate the deep safety and any extra rusher. The play fake needs time; have a quick answer ready.
Suggested reads
- Comeback. If the left corner turns and runs, look for the comeback as the receiver breaks toward the sideline.
- Cross. If that window closes, check the crossing route coming from the right. Wait for it to clear the underneath defender.
- Flat. Take the back in the right flat if the deeper throws stay covered. Only take the post shot when it separates from the safety.

Inside Zone
Shotgun · Y Off Trips
Before the snap: Count defenders near the line and check for a safety creeping down. Trips out wide doesn't guarantee a light box.
After the snap
- Press inside. Follow the back's inside track and let the blocks develop before choosing a gap.
- Make one cut. If a defender crosses a blocker's face, take the space he leaves. Don't bounce outside just because the first gap looks busy.

Y Lead Read Option
Shotgun · Doubles Y Off Wk
Before the snap: Find the defender marked as the option read in-game, then check for another defender waiting outside him.
After the snap
- Read the key. If he crashes toward the back, the QB keep is the option to check. If he waits outside, give the ball.
- Follow the lead. On a keep, work behind the lead block and account for the next defender. A crashing read defender doesn't make the edge empty.

Double Post
Shotgun · Doubles Y Off Wk
Before the snap: Locate the safety help over the two left-side posts. Against pressure, know where the back releases before waiting on a deep break.
Suggested reads
- Posts. Watch which post the safety carries. Check the other only if it has separation and a clear throwing lane.
- Crossing routes. If the safeties stay over both posts, work underneath to the routes coming across from the right.
- Back in the flat. Take the left-flat outlet if it releases into space. Don't force a post between defenders.

Your QB needs a job before he needs a highlight reel
If you live on reads and keepers, mobility belongs near the top of your checklist. If you're mostly throwing from the pocket, give those passing ratings the attention they deserve. The word Spread doesn't make every QB the same fit.
Check medium accuracy alongside the movement ratings. That second-and-eight throw over the middle is going to come up more often than the scramble you saved to your camera roll. A fast QB still has to make the throw you called.
Make the defense defend all that width
Look past your WR1. Who wins a short route? Who stretches the field? Who can take the quick throw when the box is crowded? Receiver depth gives you choices when your favorite matchup disappears.
Keep an honest run in the same formations. If a light box doesn't make you want to hand the ball off, your line and back deserve a closer look before you add another deep threat to the recruiting board.
Give your next drive a simple plan
- Pick one formation with a run and a pass you already understand.
- Before the snap, count the box and identify the first receiver you'll check.
- Save the rep where your first read gets taken away. That's where the next roster need often shows up.
